Developing an implementation plan to improve vaccine uptake in pulmonary medicine: An institutional approach through the American Thoracic Society vaccine initiative

Vaccine uptake remains a persistent challenge in subspecialty care settings, where patients with chronic pulmonary conditions — who stand to benefit most from immunization — often fall through the cracks of fragmented care systems. Improving vaccination rates requires more than clinical intent; it demands systematic, context-sensitive implementation strategies embedded in clinic workflows.

This study, published in ScienceDirect, describes how one health system translated the American Thoracic Society’s Vaccine Initiative into a concrete implementation plan for a pulmonary medicine clinic. Using the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research alongside a Quality Improvement Plan-Do-Study-Act approach, a multidisciplinary team identified 31 potential interventions and ultimately prioritized three: updating the electronic health record to improve vaccination tracking, equipping patients with communication tools to become more active participants in their own care, and establishing systematic data collection processes to monitor and adapt the effort over time. Crucially, the authors argue that their methodology is fully transferable — offering a replicable roadmap for other subspecialty clinics seeking to close vaccination gaps in their own patient populations.
